Faced with violent
protests demanding an end to his 27-year rule, President  Compaore initially
dissolved the government but said he would stay in power until elections
 could be carried out.
He changed his mind, and on Friday announced his resignation. Compaore said he stepped down to preserve peace in the country.
Bukina Faso's army
chief Nabere Honore Traore has taken over power and has instituted a
transitional body that would conduct elections for the seat of the
president in the next 90 days.  Campaore affirmed in his statement that his seat was vacant and beseech his people to conduct an election in the next 90 days in a peaceful manner.
